15 Hidden Wedding Costs

Avoid budget surprises with this comprehensive list of commonly overlooked wedding expenses.

You’ve booked the venue, bought the dress, and hired the band. Your budget is set, right? Not quite. There are dozens of small, sneaky costs that can easily add up to $3,000–$5,000 if you aren't careful. Here are the top 15 wedding costs most couples forget about until it’s too late.

1. Marriage License Fee

It’s a legal document, and it isn’t free. Depending on your location, this can range from $30 to over $100.

2. Postage for Everything

Save the dates, formal invitations, and Thank You cards all need stamps. If your invitations are heavy or awkwardly shaped, they’ll cost even more.

3. Wedding Day Insurance

Many venues actually require you to purchase a liability policy. Even if they don't, it's a smart $150–$300 investment for peace of mind.

4. Vendor Meals

You have to feed your photographer, videographer, planner, and DJ. Your caterer will usually offer "vendor meals" at a lower rate than your guest plates, but 5–8 meals still add up.

5. Gratuities / Tips

Budget for tipping your hair and makeup artists, transportation drivers, and service staff if a service fee isn't already included in your contract.

6. Alterations

Rarely does a wedding dress or suit fit perfectly off the rack. Professional alterations can easily cost between $300 and $800.

7. Overtime Fees

If your party goes 30 minutes long, you could be hit with massive fees from the venue, the DJ, and the transportation company.

8. Rentals (Chairs, Linens, Glassware)

If your venue isn't "all-inclusive," you may be surprised that tables and chairs aren't included in the base price.

9. Cake Cutting & Corkage Fees

Some venues charge $1–$5 per person just to slice the cake you brought from an outside bakery.

10. Hotel Room for the Night Before

Often overlooked! You need a place to stay while getting ready if your venue doesn't have a bridal suite.

11. Thank You Cards and Stamps

You’ll need these for engagement gifts, shower gifts, and wedding gifts. Don't let this $100–$200 expense surprise you.

12. Undergarments and Accessories

The veil, shoes, jewelry, and specialized undergarments can easily total $500+.

13. Cleaning and Preservation

After the wedding, getting your dress cleaned and preserved can cost $200–$400.

14. Welcome Bag Assembly/Delivery

If you're making welcome bags for out-of-town guests, the items inside and the bags themselves can add up. Some hotels also charge a "delivery fee" to put them in guest rooms.

15. Trials (Hair & Makeup)

Most stylists charge for the trial run. It’s an essential cost but often left out of the initial budget estimate.
